Delving into the deets
Any method of coffee making, Moka pot, cold brew, espresso, or instant coffee would work for this, just make it the way you normally prefer as long as the result is black, unsweetened, and gao gao.
To freeze, pour coffee that has been cooled to room temperature into an ice tray and leave it in the freezer to solidify overnight.
The nutritive highlight of this smoothie, the kale brings a host of nutrients like fiber, potassium, calcium, and assorted vitamins to the party. These benefits are best expressed by Urban tiller’s Curly Kale, harvested young and tender then delivered to doorsteps on the same day, their produce experiences minimal degradation of vital nutrients.
This recipe takes the edge off of coffee’s bite with the inclusion of cocoa for a comforting roundness.
We liked using dutch-process cocoa powder for this, a darker, more mellow type of chocolate powder that dissolves more readily however, the regular cocoa powder will do the trick too.
To avoid upset stomachs in view of an active day ahead, the foundation for this frappe is the dairy-alternative oat milk. This protein and energy-laden stand-in for dairy balances the heavier components of this smoothie and is tender on tummies while being more environmentally friendly than regular milk.
While any nut butter would suffice for this application, the Almond butter by Nuts Everything is a nutrient-packed spread that’s high in fiber, vitamins, and monosaturated oil (the good kind of fat).
